Why do people in Venice row boats standing up?
The history of Veneto-style rowing is associated with the specific characteristics of the lagoon and the "use of flat bottomed boats without keel, which are light weight and can be steered by a single oarsman ... Rowing a boat with two crossed oars - called "alla Valesana" - was and still is practiced in the shoals and in the fishing valleys, however, this style of rowing is not possible in the narrow waterways in Venice with the heavy boat traffic. The oarsmen developed a special one-oared rowing technique in order to do away with the rudder, which was aided by their development of asymmetrical boats.A bit of exotica: even abroad many folks have fallen in love with this type of boating and gondolas are used in Holland, Germany, the United States and even China

Does it flood every time it rains in Venice?
Rain and flooding are not strictly related to each other. Acqua alta is nothing but a rather hefty high tide, such as often to flood, in some periods of the year, especially in October, November and December, the lower points of many fondamente (streets bordering canals), calli (streets), and campi (squares). Only very seldom are wide parts of the city flooded. This contrasts with a misunderstanding common among those who do not personally know the matter and are lead to think that acqua alta means water reaching to one's navel. It isn't obviously so: for instance, when "+100 cm acqua alta is mentioned, that meter only represents the increase in comparison with the average sea level (the average sea level conventionally accepted is the 1897 one measured at the Punta della Salute). At this level, only a very small number of city points get flooded.

The friends of the Honey House are organizing on Sunday 5th September, day of the great Venice Regata storica, an appropriate stage to be watching to the magnificent event, directly on a “bragozzo” (the typical fishing Venetian boat) docked in Gran Canal. The occasion is unique, for an event unique that has always embraced citizens and visitors alike. The first historical evidence dates from halfway through the XIII century and is linked to the "Festa delle Marie" (the Feast-day of the Marys), but it is probable that, in a city like Venice which has always been projected onto the sea, the regatta had earlier origins, dictated by the need to train rowing crews. Even now the Regata Storica is one of the most spectacular, picturesque and moving events of Venetian life, capable of both charming the tourists and exciting the locals. A historical procession commemorates the welcome given to Caterina Cornaro, wife of the King of Cyprus, in 1489 after she renounced her throne in favour of Venice. It is a procession of 16th century style boats, with the famous Bucintoro, the boat representing the Serenissima, at its head. Then comes the competition. The Redentore Feast in Venice

The Redentore is one of the Venetians' most treasured festivities, and is a tourist attraction thanks to the spectacular firework display in the evening. It falls on the third Sunday in July, when Holy Mass is held in the presence of the Patriarch, followed by a religious procession.
But the special moment of the festivity takes place on Saturday night: with the unbeatable backdrop of Saint Mark's Basin, a play of lights and reflections produce a kaleidoscope of colours with the silhouetted spires, domes and bell towers of the city behind.
The weekend ends with a gondola regatta.
The story
In the three years between 1575 and 1577 the Serenissima was tormented by the plague: aided by the high density of the population, the disease spread through the city, causing terrible losses. Almost 50,000 died, which was more than a third of the city's inhabitants.
On September 4, 1576, the Senate decided that the Doge should announce the vow to erect a church dedicated to the Redentore (Redeemer), in return for help in ending the plague.
On July 13, 1577, the plague was declared definitively over and it was decided that the city's liberation from the terrible disease should be celebrated on the third Sunday in July.
The Redentore today
At sunset the well illuminated boats, decorated with boughs and coloured balloons, begin congregating in Saint Mark's Basin and the Giudecca Canal. In the boats people eat traditional food, waiting for the firework display, which begins at 11.30pm and lasts until after midnight.

In Venice an exhibition dedicated to the sculptures of the Cà Pesaro Collection

Until 25 July the prestigious venue of Cà Pesaro in Venice presents an interesting exhibition dedicated to sculpture: “Le forme del Moderno – Scultura a Ca’ Pesaro. Da Medardo Rosso a Viani, da Rodin ad Arturo Martini”. This exhibition features some thirty works belonging to the famous Ca’ Pesaro sculpture collection, a completely new tour which focuses on formal values and unusual combinations.
The exhibition winds through sumptuous spaces of the Longhena entrance hall on the ground floor and the monumental second floor recently restored to its museum function. Finally we can see works that have been inaccessible to the public for so long. On the second floor you will see different and intriguing relations presented between sculptures and paintings, starting with the grandiose frieze by Giulio Aristide Sartorio, the “Cycle of Life” created for the Italia Pavilion of the Biennale of 1907, and equally significant large canvases figuring in a continuous study of associations and dialogue between expressive forms and languages.The exhibition is not only a perfect proposal for recovering and remodelling the museum, but the first event of the Ca’ Pesaro 2010 Program, almost entirely devoted to sculpture.

This event originated 36 years ago with the aim of making Venetians aware of the problem of swell created by engine-powered boats, thanks to the initiative of a group of Venetians who were lovers of rowing and of the traditions of the "Serenissima". Since then the number of participants, especially from abroad, has continued to grow, with entries totalling up to 1500 boats. In the morning a large number of boats of every type and shape gather in St. Mark's Basin opposite the Doge's Palace to await the start; they then set off on a roughly 30 kilometre long course that winds its way among the lagoon islands before returning to Venice along the Rio di Cannaregio to finish at the Punta della Dogana. The success of this event not only encouraged the creation of rowing clubs but also stimulated the then dying crafts of boat restoration and construction. Participation in the Vogalonga, a non-competitive event, is also an opportunity for everyone to rediscover the lagoon, its landscapes and its habitat.

The enchantment of the city's marriage to the sea is back

Sunday 16th May 2010Every year Venice attracts millions of visitors to events that are famous the world over.

The Festa della Sensa, is one of the city's best known festivals that bring to life its thousand year history and its close ties to the sea and the art of "Voga alla Veneta" rowing.
The Sensa (Ascension Day) Festival was celebrated by the Venetian Republic on the day of Christ's Ascension.

Sensa is the Venetian dialect word for ascension. It commemorates two important events in the life of the Republic: one on 9 May in the year 1000, when Doge Pietro Orseolo II came to the rescue of the inhabitants of Dalmatia, who were under the Slav menace.

The second event took place in 1177, when, in the reign of Doge Sebastiano Ziani, Pope Alexander III and Emperor Frederick Barbarossa signed the peace treaty in Venice that put an end to the century-long diatribe between the Papacy and the Empire.

The rite of the Wedding with the Sea used to take place on the occasion of the Ascension Day Festival.

Every year on that day the Doge on his state barge, the Bucintoro, sailed to Sant'Elena, at the level of San Pietro di Castello Church.

The Bishop waited to bless him on a boat with gilt sides.

To emphasise the Serenissima Republic's dominion over the sea, the Festival culminated with a kind of propitiatory rite: the Doge sailed to the channel between the lagoon and the sea and threw a gold ring into the water.

La Sensa todayThanks to the Comitato Festa della Sensa, Venice began to celebrate Ascension Day again in 1965, with a programme that goes far beyond mere re-evocation: the Gemellaggio Adriatico ("Adriatic twinning") project now links the Serenissima Republic with a city or a geographic area that has had a special historical relationship with Venice, joined in a bond of culture, love of the sea and the activities connected with the sea.

In the 2010 edition of the Festival, the ring that is its symbol will pass from the Province of Bergamo to the City of Larnaca (Cyprus).

In addition to this, the Festival is the occasion for the award of the "Premio Osella d'Oro della Sensa", which is given to public bodies, institutions and private citizens that have given lustre to the city by means of their activities in the spheres of culture, crafts and trade.

Part of the commemoration today will be the Doge's procession in San Marco Square, the Sensa Market at the Church of San Nicolò on Lido, Venetian style rowing races, a water parade by the local rowing clubs, the Fort of Sant'Andrea Festival and many other events that confirm that the Sensa today is a great time for meeting and fully realising the value of Venetian history and traditions: it is the festival of the city itself and its relationship with the sea.

The vast and variegated De Boos Smith collection, never previously exhibited, offers a comprehensive and fascinating panorama of nineteenth-century Murano production, from filigree to millefiore, from avventurine to chalcedony, that will also appeal to a non-expert audience.The exhibition will be grouped according to different techniques to allow a better understanding of how ancient works were revived in Murano in the nineteenth century.
An original Renaissance or Baroque piece, the prototype of the technique under consideration, will thus be displayed for each group as an example of the models studied by the nineteenth-century glassmakers.
The Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti will also present documentation of the prizes it awarded at the time to stimulate the glass revival. Given the small, sometimes tiny size of many of the pieces in the De Boos Smith collection, corresponding to the nineteenth-century taste for small, precious objects, a selection of about 300 pieces is envisaged.

Visiting the Prosecco exhibitions on the hills of the North Venice

The Primavera Prosecco Docg is the most important wine-tasting circuit in the Veneto region. Until 20th June, there will be seventeen exhibitions to animate the splendid hills of the Trevisan Alta Marca.
In each one, you will have the chance to taste the famous Prosecco Docg from Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, together with other wines from the region, such as Cartizze Docg, Torchiato di Fregona Doc (a rarity among Italian Passito dessert wines), Refrontolo Passito Doc, Verdiso and Colli di Conegliano Doc white and red. And to accompany the wine there will be some tasty genuine local cuisine with typical local dishes and plates from the region.
As in the past editions, to characterise the high quality of wines offered, there will be the Gran Premio Primavera Prosecco Docg, with a special tasting jury who will evaluate all the wines present in the individual exhibitions (from about 400 wine-producers), and elect the "Champions", who will be the flag bearers of the quality wine from the region for the year to follow.
Many various itineraries will be proposed for the occasion, aimed at discovering the Trevisan foothills. From the Molinetto della Croda at Refrontolo, to the Grotte del Caglieron at Fregona, from the Abbey of the Cistercense Monks at Follina, to that of Santa Bona at Vidor; and on to the San Salvatore Castle at Susegana, the Credazzo Towers at Farra di Soligo, the Isle of the Dead at Moriago della Battaglia, the Serravalle castle and that of Conegliano.
The Trevisan Alta Marca is a territory that in just a few tens of kilometres connects the Pre-Alps to the Venetian Lagoon. The tourist who chooses this area cannot fail to appreciate the beauty of the localities and their warm and sincere hospitality.

The international nautical festival comes to Venice
A weekend in the splendid city of Venice to admire and perhaps even try and buy a wonderful vessel. This will take place between 18 and 21 March during the ninth edition of the International Nautical Expo. The event will take place in the historical venue of the Maritime Terminal, presenting the latest ideas and important partnerships.
This year, besides the most prestigious international brands for large yachts and small nautical vessels, the event also includes chartering for the coming summer season. The organisers aim to enhance the exhibition potential of Venice even more with activities revolving around the sea and the nautical world, and the new edition of the Nautical Expo aims to fly high thanks to the presence of the exhibition yards, the enhancement of quality second-hand boats, and the development of the chartering sector.
Specifically, during the ninth edition of the Nautical Expo an exclusive area will be reserved for chartering, with an invitation to discover routes, vessels and services for those who want to plan their summer season in advance.The Venice International Nautical Expo will also branch out in May during the "May Sea" event, held between 14 and 16 May at the Venetian Arsenal, a venue which is a symbol of seamanship and the art of seafaring. It is an area of great historical, artistic, industrial and cultural value, until now inaccessible for expos and exhibitions.

Unpublished drawings from 19th century Venice

The Correr Museum (St. Mark Square) collection of 19th century Venetian drawings (till April 11 2010 is one of the largest collection of examples of graphic arts of that century. It comprises several hundred sheets of different quality and nature, which have never had the attention they deserve, due to their long being considered a 'minor' heritage and being mainly used for their documentary value.Slowly, however, the exceptional significance of these collections has emerged, from various points of view. The Town Museum Foundation of Venice presents a large selection of these works in this exhibition, as part of its program of appreciation of the immense cultural heritage of the collections. These are mostly unpublished works by authors such as Caffi, Pividor, Giacomo Guardi, Moro, Bosa, Vervloet and others. Either the subject matter of the works is Venice or the works were conceived and created in Venice, about Venice or inspired by the town and its monumental and social aspects, as a subject for practice or for poetic resonance.The Venice that emerges from these 19th century drawings is surprising: it is modern and old at the same time, distracted and suffering, secret and well known; it reveals the nerves and muscles of a body scarred but not broken, still vital and dynamic. Above all the drawings record the onrush of reality and truthfulness in addition to rhetoric and regrets, nostalgia and lament. It is an unusual and fascinating Venice in the years of Ruskin and of the first large and debated restoration projects, the affirmation of a tourism in search of feelings which are distinct from those of the Grand Tour of the Enlightenment.

The Venetian “castradina”
The Festa della Madonna della Salute in Venice perfectly expresses the lagoon city's history and tradition: it is in this spirit that you have to understand the tradition of eating castradina on November 21. It is a tribute to the loyalty of the Dalmatians who, during Venice's long plague-induced isolation, were the only state to provide Venice with food. However, they could only bring what they had to hand: mutton, which was readily available in that region. And so during those seemingly never-ending eighteen months of isolation the Venetians ate almost nothing else. This is why, in memory of that trying time, the tradition of eating castradina on November 21 is maintained to this day
Recipe
Chop a leg of salted and smoked mutton into pieces and leave it to boil for about two hours. After the first half-hour of cooking, throw away the water (and the fat), replace it and continue to boil. Then add some Savoy cabbage, previously chopped and browned in a pan with plenty of onion. Continue cooking for another hour. Add salt and pepper. It is an extremely tasty dish: it is advisable to let your guests know what you are cooking, because its strong flavour is not to everybody's taste

THE MADONNA DELLA SALUTE IN VENICE (November 21st)

The Festa della Salute is probably the least "touristy" of the Venetian festivities and evokes strong religious feelings among the city's inhabitants. The holiday is, like the Redentore, in memory of another bout of pestilence, which lasted for two years from 1630-31, and the subsequent vow by the Doge to obtain the intercession of the Virgin Mary. Even today, thousands of inhabitants visit the main altar of the imposing Salute Church on November 21 to give thanks, and a strong symbolic tie remains between the city and the Virgin Mary

History
In 1630, over 50 years after the terrible plague of 1575-77, the disease gripped Venice once more. Doge Nicolò Contarini made a public vow to erect a church called the Salute, asking for the Virgin Mary's divine intercession to rid the city of the plague
The churchEleven architects took part in the competition to build the church and the winner was Baldassarre Longhena. His design perfectly captured the grandiosity and magnificence that the Serenissima wanted: a church that exalted the Holy Virgin and the Republic at the same time.
The "Festa della Salute" todayEven today, on November 21, thousands of people cross the votive bridge and reach the majestic Salute Church to give thanks and ask the Virgin Mary to keep them in good health

On the day of the Madonna della Salute it is customary to eat the castradina, a mutton-based traditional dish

The gondola and other Venetian boats - the GONDOLA

The Venetian boat par excellence, whose origin remains a mystery in spite of extensive research into the subject. Once, gondolas were extravagantly decorated by their wealthy and titled owners, whose fondness for ostentation was curbed by a sumptuary edict dictating that henceforth they should all be painted black. The rules for construction are extremely strict: the right side must be 24 millimetres narrower than the left (this assymetry is know as lai); the boat must measure 10.75 metres in length and have an internal breadth of 1.38 metres. The gondola is used exclusively for ferrying persons and for boat races. Eight different types of wood are used in its construction and it is made up of over 280 different parts. The only parts in metal are the characteristic "ferro" of the prow and the "risso" of the stern. The "ferro" characterises the gondola's prow and guarantees the boat's longitudinal stability, acting as a counterbalance to the gondolier's weight. Popular tradition has it that the anterior "pettini" represent the six neighbourhoods of the city and the posterior one represents the island of Giudecca; the double "S" curve is the Grand Canal and the lunette, positioned under a stylised doge's cap, is Rialto Bridge.

THE 24th VENICEMARATHON – Venice, Sunday October 25th 2009

The Venicemarathon has earned a place among the most important events of the city. It is a sports event of international standing, attracting over 6,000 runners from all over the world every year. The marathon is held over the official Olympic distance of 42,195 kilometers (26,224 miles). The course is flat and basically downhill. It starts from Stra and runs along the River Brenta, passing in front of the magnificent Palladian Villas of the area. The runners arrive in Venice via the Liberty Bridge, which links the mainland to the city. After crossing a floating bridge 400 feet long over the Grand Canal which leads to St. Mark's Square, runners reach the Riva dei Sette Martiri in the picturesque waterfront of Venice where the finish line is located.
