VENETIAN APPOINTMENTS (from 2010 August 22nd)
-The Historical Regatta - September 5, 2010 Water is the element that most characterises Venice and it is no coincidence that the most famous and spectacular festivity in the city takes place on the waters of the Grand Canal. The spectacular event starts with a magnificent historical procession consisting of splendid, elaborately carved boats complete with hundreds of figures in gorgeous brocade costumes.
12th International Architecture Exhibition: August 29- November 21, 2010 The 12th International Architecture Exhibition, People meet in architecture, directed by Kazuyo Sejima, will be held at the Giardini and at the Arsenale (preview August 26, 27 and 28, 2010), and in various other venues in Venice.
The 67th Venice Film Festival: September 1-11, 2010 The aim of the Festival is to raise awareness and promote all the various aspects of international cinema in all its forms: as art, entertainment and as an industry, in a spirit of freedom and tolerance. The Festival includes retrospectives and homages to major figures as a contribution towards raising awarendss of the history of cinema.
The Word, the Images, until August 31, 2010 An opportunity to live in the space offered by the church of San Lio, not only as a place of worship but also a place for meditation and reflection.

COME WITH US TO THE REGATA STORICA

The friends of the Honey House are organizing on Sunday 5th September, day of the great Venice Regata storica, an appropriate stage to be watching to the magnificent event, directly on a “bragozzo” (the typical fishing Venetian boat) docked in Gran Canal. The occasion is unique, for an event unique that has always embraced citizens and visitors alike. The first historical evidence dates from halfway through the XIII century and is linked to the "Festa delle Marie" (the Feast-day of the Marys), but it is probable that, in a city like Venice which has always been projected onto the sea, the regatta had earlier origins, dictated by the need to train rowing crews. Even now the Regata Storica is one of the most spectacular, picturesque and moving events of Venetian life, capable of both charming the tourists and exciting the locals. A historical procession commemorates the welcome given to Caterina Cornaro, wife of the King of Cyprus, in 1489 after she renounced her throne in favour of Venice. It is a procession of 16th century style boats, with the famous Bucintoro, the boat representing the Serenissima, at its head. Then comes the competition. The spectators participate with gusto and shouts of encouragement during the sporting events. EMBARKATION 1.00 pm, disembarkation 7.30 pm, 30 euro each one

The Redentore Feast in Venice

The Redentore is one of the Venetians' most treasured festivities, and is a tourist attraction thanks to the spectacular firework display in the evening. It falls on the third Sunday in July, when Holy Mass is held in the presence of the Patriarch, followed by a religious procession.
But the special moment of the festivity takes place on Saturday night: with the unbeatable backdrop of Saint Mark's Basin, a play of lights and reflections produce a kaleidoscope of colours with the silhouetted spires, domes and bell towers of the city behind.
The weekend ends with a gondola regatta.
The story
In the three years between 1575 and 1577 the Serenissima was tormented by the plague: aided by the high density of the population, the disease spread through the city, causing terrible losses. Almost 50,000 died, which was more than a third of the city's inhabitants.
On September 4, 1576, the Senate decided that the Doge should announce the vow to erect a church dedicated to the Redentore (Redeemer), in return for help in ending the plague.
On July 13, 1577, the plague was declared definitively over and it was decided that the city's liberation from the terrible disease should be celebrated on the third Sunday in July.

At sunset the well illuminated boats, decorated with boughs and coloured balloons, begin congregating in Saint Mark's Basin and the Giudecca Canal. In the boats people eat traditional food, waiting for the firework display, which begins at 11.30pm and lasts until after midnight.
