Venice Carnival 2012 (till 21 february) – the Wine Fountain
The carnival started off with a grand toast at the Wine Fountain, with masks, costumes and traditional dances. The event was preceded by a concert of the traditional Choir "DoReMi", that played a selection of traditional Venetian songs like the hymn of San Marco, “Venezia, la luna e Tu” and “El Gondolier”, and by the dances of groups of masks in XVIII century costumes (In partnership with "Overdream", "Associazione degli amici del Carnevale", "Associazione Internazionale del Carnevale di Venezia"). The Wine Fountain, realized in partnership with "Enoteca Veneta", will be open to the public every day until 21th February in Piazzetta San Marco: a good chance to taste the best wines of the Veneto region, like Raboso, Garganega, Carmenere, Merlot, Corvina, Prosecco.

VENICE CARNIVAL 2012 (till 21 February)
The CarnivalRe-launched two decades ago, the Carnival was immediately regarded both in Italy and abroad as an event not to be missed.
Venice Carnival is steeped in history, charm and tradition: its inhabitants and tourists alike have taken a keen interest in it, thanks to its mix of transgression, art, history and culture in one of the most unique cities in the world.
During the ten days of Carnival leading up to Mardi Gras, Venice is a hive of activity and entertainment, from improvised street entertainment to performances put on by the organisers.
A central idea is chosen each year that is taken from various cultural or show-biz themes.
Saint Mark's Square remains the heart of Carnival, with its huge stage, although other events take place throughout the city, helping to avoid an excessive build-up of people in pedestrianised Venice.
----------------------
HistoryThe Carnival has its roots in many traditions, from the Latin feast of Saturnalia to the Greek feast of Dionysian cults. The Venice Carnival lasted for a few months, with public festivities, private parties, fireworks, street entertainers, and this certainly helped to create the image of Venice as a city dedicated to pleasure.
-----------------------
Carnival in the 18th centuryDuring its final century of power appears concentrated on life's more exterior and frivolous pleasures. During this period Carnival, with its parties, entertainments, masks, theatres and public gaming house, became a tourist attraction for the whole of Europe.
-------------------------
The theatresVenice's theatre season was the richest in Europe thanks to the many theatres in the city: Sixteen theatres were active in the 17th century. The Goldoni Theatre and the historic Malibran Theatre take centre stage during the mixed bag of events. The Fenice reopened in 2003 offering first-class performances after the completion of lengthy and complex restoration.
--------------------------
The MasksDuring the last days of carnival the city teems with people in masks who happily invade streets and squares in search of fun and getting themselves noticed. It's possible to see every kind of costume, from static and icy 18th century noblewomen to the most inventive modern costumes.
---------------------------
Traditional sweetsThe traditional sweets of the Venice Carnival are Frittelle and Galani, which are symbols of the Carnival itself

Venice Carnival from the 11th to 21st of February 2012
"LIFE IS A THEATER. IT’S TIME TO GET MASKED"
The Carnival of Venice 2012, renews the city’s ancient ‘liaison’ with its spectacular performances- the staging of the Commedia- which had its own unique historical relationship to the famous masks of the Carnival. From the 11th to 21st of February, and with a colourful preview on February 4th and 5th, we are going to celebrate and remember Venice as the ancient capital of modern theater - with over 25 active theaters throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth century. Furthermore we are going to recall the sense of disguising: the discovery of a new "character" of our personality through the wearing of a costume. We want the festival to turn into a major event of performing arts, in which each visitor of the city becomes a protagonist of this famous Festival that is a fundamental part of our country’s cultural heritage. The city of Venice will be the host of different scenic shows and events in main Campos and on the Grand Canal featuring concerts, live performances by international artists and mask parades. The Carnival offers a daily and diverse artistic program in the Grand Theatre of St. Mark's Square and in dozens of other public art spaces from early in the morning until late at night. Put on your mask and we will see you in Venice, where life is a theater!

EXQUISITE GLASS ORNAMENTS IN VENICE
The nineteenth-century glass revival
Venezia, 17 March – 20 JuneIstituto Veneto di Scienze Lettere ed ArtiPalazzo Loredan, Campo Santo Stefano
curated by Rosa Barovier Mentasti
The vast and variegated De Boos Smith collection, never previously exhibited, offers a comprehensive and fascinating panorama of nineteenth-century Murano production, from filigree to millefiore, from avventurine to chalcedony, that will also appeal to a non-expert audience. The exhibition will be grouped according to different techniques to allow a better understanding of how ancient works were revived in Murano in the nineteenth century.
An original Renaissance or Baroque piece, the prototype of the technique under consideration, will thus be displayed for each group as an example of the models studied by the nineteenth-century glassmakers.
The Istituto Veneto di Scienze, Lettere ed Arti will also present documentation of the prizes it awarded at the time to stimulate the glass revival. Given the small, sometimes tiny size of many of the pieces in the De Boos Smith collection, corresponding to the nineteenth-century taste for small, precious objects, a selection of about 300 pieces is envisaged.
Opening times: daily 11am – 6pm, closed on Tuesday
