ON THE VENETIAN BOATS – The Gondolino

Created and used exclusively for the Historical Regatta, the gondolino first raced in 1825. It was designed specifically to make the Regatta more competitive and exciting.

It is lighter and swifter than the gondola on which it is modelled. The current version measures 10.5 metres from end to end, whilst its bottom is 0.65 metres wide.

Art night Venice 2012

Enjoy a free evening of art, music and entertainment as Venice’s most prominent arts and cultural institutions swing open their doors.

A crescent moon, shaped unmistakably like the metal prow of a gondola immersed in a sea of indigo is the symbol chosen for Art Night Venice, scheduled for Saturday, June 23rd 2012.

From sunset until late at night the whole city will become an open air show, and several events - of all sort of arts, including music, cinema, literature and poetry - will attract art lovers around the canals and along the Grand Canal, which will turn into a fascinating stage.

Museums, galleries, foundations, public and private venues will swing open their doors and leave free entry to all who want to discover their secrets. Even the bookshops will open their spaces to visitors, and all the shops will stay open until late.

It will also be a way to know the city from other points of view: under the starry sky of the lagoon city, you can explore the hidden Venice and lesser known works of art.

The Green Night in Venice

Green economy and sustainable development

The City of Venice participates in the event Green Night in the NorthEast, that involves several cities and districts of the metropolitan area of Veneto, Trentino Alto Adige and Friuli Venezia Giulia, on Saturday May 5th 2012.

From late afternoon and into the night, many cities will simultaneously go green when city squares, industrial plants and cultural venues will illuminate with green lights: 200,000 people are expected to give rise to the largest European event of this kind.

Debates and workshops, project presentations and products, artistic performances and exhibitions, tastings of organic products or km 0, will enliven Venice and the other cities in the Northeast, exploring the best sustainable experiences: clean technology and alternative energy, mobility and waste management, green architecture and design, smart city, agriculture, formation. Shops and cultural venues will be open throughout the night

ON THE VENETIAN BOATS – The Gondola

The Gondola

The Venetian boat par excellence, whose origin remains a mystery in spite of extensive research into the subject.

Once, gondolas were extravagantly decorated by their wealthy and titled owners, whose fondness for ostentation was curbed by a sumptuary edict dictating that henceforth they should all be painted black.

The rules for construction are extremely strict: the right side must be 24 millimetres narrower than the left (this assymetry is know as lai); the boat must measure 10.75 metres in length and have an internal breadth of 1.38 metres. The gondola is used exclusively for ferrying persons and for boat races. Eight different types of wood are used in its construction and it is made up of over 280 different parts. The only parts in metal are the characteristic "ferro" of the prow and the "risso" of the stern.

The "ferro" characterises the gondola's prow and guarantees the boat's longitudinal stability, acting as a counterbalance to the gondolier's weight.

Popular tradition has it that the anterior "pettini" represent the six neighbourhoods of the city and the posterior one represents the island of Giudecca; the double "S" curve is the Grand Canal and the lunette, positioned under a stylised doge's cap, is Rialto Bridge.

The "Art Vaporetto" to discover Venice

One of the goals set by the present City Council of Venice is to foster policies aimed at attracting qualified tourism, that is, visitors interested in experiencing art in all its forms and in discovering Venice beyond its most famous highlights, such as St. Mark's Square and Rialto Bridge. It is exactely in order to promote this kind of tourism that the City has decided to launch the "Art Vaporetto", a new waterbus line which will connect the main cultural sites in town along the Grand Canal and St. Mark's Basin. Visitors will receive on board multimedia information about the attractions to be seen and will be able to hop-on hop-off at any time to focus on their specific interests. The new service, to be run by the City's public transport company Actv, is set to start on June 1st 2012. With the 'Art Vaporetto' Venice especially chose to enrich its cultural offer for those who are curious to discover the City's immense cultural heritage. The other very important outcome of this project is that we have been able, as a public administration, to create a network among the many cultural institutions in town. I'm absolutely confindent that this initiative will contribute to reinforce the nomination of Venice with the NorthEst as European Capital of Culture 2019".
Eight stops are planned:
Ferrovia Santa Lucia (Jewish Museum)
San Stae (Ca’ Pesaro, Palazzo Mocenigo, Prada Foundation, Oriental Art Museum)
Ca’ d’Oro (Franchetti Gallery at the Ca’ d’Oro)
S. Samuele (Palazzo Grassi, La Fenice Theatre)
Accademia (Accademia Galleries, Ca’Rezzonico, The Peggy Guggenheim Collection)
Salute (Punta della Dogana)
S. Marco Giardinetti (Doges’ Palace, Correr Museum, National Archaeological Museum, Marciana Library, Clock Tower, Palazza Grimani Museum)
S. Giorgio (Cini Foundation)
with the addition of Arsenale and Giardini in high season for visitors to the Biennale.

Venetian curiosity – the narrowest way is 53 cm!

The narrowest “calle” (so in Venetian language the pedestrian ways) in Venice is only 53 centimetres wide, in the Cannaregio sestiere, near Fondamente Nove – Campiello del Pestrin.
Among the other holdest calli there is also the Calle Stretta in Santa Croce sestiere, in the cross between Campiello Albrizzi and Sottoportico della Furatola (65 cm).
Again there is Calle di Ca’ Zusto, near Riva Biasio with 68 cm

VENICE CARNIVAL 2012 (till 21 February)

The CarnivalRe-launched two decades ago, the Carnival was immediately regarded both in Italy and abroad as an event not to be missed.
Venice Carnival is steeped in history, charm and tradition: its inhabitants and tourists alike have taken a keen interest in it, thanks to its mix of transgression, art, history and culture in one of the most unique cities in the world.
During the ten days of Carnival leading up to Mardi Gras, Venice is a hive of activity and entertainment, from improvised street entertainment to performances put on by the organisers.
A central idea is chosen each year that is taken from various cultural or show-biz themes.
Saint Mark's Square remains the heart of Carnival, with its huge stage, although other events take place throughout the city, helping to avoid an excessive build-up of people in pedestrianised Venice.
----------------------

HistoryThe Carnival has its roots in many traditions, from the Latin feast of Saturnalia to the Greek feast of Dionysian cults. The Venice Carnival lasted for a few months, with public festivities, private parties, fireworks, street entertainers, and this certainly helped to create the image of Venice as a city dedicated to pleasure.
-----------------------
Carnival in the 18th centuryDuring its final century of power appears concentrated on life's more exterior and frivolous pleasures. During this period Carnival, with its parties, entertainments, masks, theatres and public gaming house, became a tourist attraction for the whole of Europe.

-------------------------
The theatresVenice's theatre season was the richest in Europe thanks to the many theatres in the city: Sixteen theatres were active in the 17th century. The Goldoni Theatre and the historic Malibran Theatre take centre stage during the mixed bag of events. The Fenice reopened in 2003 offering first-class performances after the completion of lengthy and complex restoration.

--------------------------

The MasksDuring the last days of carnival the city teems with people in masks who happily invade streets and squares in search of fun and getting themselves noticed. It's possible to see every kind of costume, from static and icy 18th century noblewomen to the most inventive modern costumes.
---------------------------
Traditional sweetsThe traditional sweets of the Venice Carnival are Frittelle and Galani, which are symbols of the Carnival itself

Venice Carnival from the 11th to 21st of February 2012

"LIFE IS A THEATER. IT’S TIME TO GET MASKED"

The Carnival of Venice 2012, renews the city’s ancient ‘liaison’ with its spectacular performances- the staging of the Commedia- which had its own unique historical relationship to the famous masks of the Carnival. From the 11th to 21st of February, and with a colourful preview on February 4th and 5th, we are going to celebrate and remember Venice as the ancient capital of modern theater - with over 25 active theaters throughout the seventeenth and eighteenth century. Furthermore we are going to recall the sense of disguising: the discovery of a new "character" of our personality through the wearing of a costume. We want the festival to turn into a major event of performing arts, in which each visitor of the city becomes a protagonist of this famous Festival that is a fundamental part of our country’s cultural heritage. The city of Venice will be the host of different scenic shows and events in main Campos and on the Grand Canal featuring concerts, live performances by international artists and mask parades. The Carnival offers a daily and diverse artistic program in the Grand Theatre of St. Mark's Square and in dozens of other public art spaces from early in the morning until late at night. Put on your mask and we will see you in Venice, where life is a theater!
